Conservation treatments & Re-Housing ✐
I work on paper and leather artworks, books (manuscript and printed) and photographic materials. The aim of conservation treatments is to make the artworks “readable” to everybody, today and in the future.
After the condition report and the photographic documentary of the items, the first step is the surface cleaning. Then, conservation treatments stabilize the items mechanically and/or chemically creating the minor interference with the objects (minimum intervention concept). All the materials used in conservation treatments are reversable and the treatments are recognizable.
The major part of damages on collections comes from bad storage conditions/ housing. That's why, after the photographic documentation, the last step in conservation projects is a good re-housing of the collections/items. Condition report has to be updated after conservation treatments. It has to report the list of treatments done.
Sometimes conservation treatments need to be adapted thinking on the aim of the project and on the resources available. If the resources available are not enough for conservation treatments, a good re-housing project it’s the best solution to make the item’s life to be longer.
