Condition survey ✐
The condition survey is the first step that need to be done before planning conservation treatments. It helps to check the quantity of the items and to have a list of them. The condition report is the "tool" used to do that. It details the condition of the items based on a close examination of them. When combined with photographs and illustrations, the condition report clearly records the physical condition of the items. Checking the condition of the items is a good way to select priorities (items most at-risk). It should be done item by item. It can be done by items groups in case of a big collections containing groups of items that have the same characteristics and the same kind of damages. The condition report helps to track any changes that happen in the items conditions due to: natural aging, inappropriate storage conditions, before and after a loan or an exhibition, before and after conservation treatments, etc. We can say that condition report is the ID of the items.
My method in condition reporting provide the use of datasheet templates that I update on occasion depending on the type of collections and materials to work on.
